Birth and Parentage of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam:-
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, of the most prominent figures of the present world, was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. His full name is Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. Jainulabdeen was his father and Ashiamana was his mother. His father was a humble fisherman who owned a boat. Dr. Kalam lived in their ancestral house which was built in the middle of the 19th century. His father possessed neither much formal education nor wealth.
His Education:-
Dr. Kalam had a secure childhood both materially and emotionally. He took his primary education in the school of Rameshwaram. After that, he studied at Schwartz High School at Ramanathapuram from where he went to Tiruchchirappalli for his higher education. He did his B.Sc. from St. Joseph College, Tiruchchirappalli. He did a course in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Engineering College in 1954-1957.
His activities:-
Dr. Kalam started his career with DRDO in 1958 and went ahead to join ISRO five years later where he was the project director of SLVB. The beginning of India’s acro space program started when Dr. Kalam launched ‘Rohini’ successfully in 1980. In 1981, he was honored with Padma Bhushan.
In 1982, he was entrusted with the development of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. Dr. Kalam henceforth plunged into developing ‘Prithvi’, the surface-to-surface weapon system, Agni, Trishul, Akash, and Nag. In 1990, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997. In 1998, nuclear tests were conducted, and thereafter he was appointed the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. In December 2000, the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, K.C. Pant conferred the Lifetime Contribution Award’ to Dr. Kalam. On July 25, 2002, Dr. Kalam took Oath as the 11th President of India. He retired from his job on July 25, 2007, after completion of the term.
His Literary Works:-
Dr. Kalam has a literary bent of mind as well “Wings of Fire” is his autobiography. He has also written “Ignited Minds” and “India 2020, a vision of the New Millenium“. Dr. Kalam is a poet too. He enjoys music and is fond of playing Veena. His book Guiding Souls: Dialogues on the purpose of life” reveals his spiritual facets too.
His Personality:-
Even being a great and honored man, he is extremely simple, kind, and gentle. He loves children very much. Even after holding the highest constitutional title, he meets school children, talks to them; interact with them, and inspires them. He observes strict discipline. He reads both the Quran and the Bhagwad Gita.

Dr. Kalam Sir is the ‘Missile Man ‘ of India. All Indians are proud of his achievements and humble personality.
